Central to the American narrative is the story of the self-made individual – someone who overcame modest beginnings through hard work and determination. This meritocratic ideal has fueled our collective focus on financial literacy: the belief that financial freedom is simply a matter of personal responsibility and living “within our means.”
Yet, if equality of opportunity remains more an ideal than a reality – as the data suggests – funders and policymakers must embrace a different mindset. How can we, as grantmakers and changemakers, challenge entrenched narratives about economic opportunity and see things differently? How do we adopt responsive and effective interventions that build trust, foster collaboration, and create lasting impact?
In partnership with Ashoka, this program explores pathways to a more inclusive and thriving financial future, featuring José Quiñonez, an Ashoka Fellow and Founder and CEO of Mission Asset Fund. Quiñonez will explore what it means to support underbanked communities, building bridges between these communities and mainstream financial systems. This session will inspire funders to rethink their strategies and embrace approaches that support systemic change, foster stronger nonprofit relationships, and elevate the voices of those most affected.
